A love for literacy

How The Book Cellar Came to Life

The story of The Book Cellar begins with a shared dream between Megan Bordwine and Chad Thompson, husband and wife. In the spring of 2023, driven by their mutual love for books and community, they turned their vision into reality by opening a cozy used bookstore in the heart of historic Abingdon, Virginia.

For Megan and Chad, books have always been more than just stories—they’re doorways to connection, inspiration, and learning. They imagined a space where book lovers could gather, discover hidden literary gems, and instantly feel at home.

With this dream in mind, they set out to create a warm, inviting bookstore rooted in sustainability and community spirit. From the beginning, they embraced second-hand materials for the books they sell and the store’s foundation. Every shelf, fixture, and detail reflects their belief in giving things—and stories—a second life.

Today, The Book Cellar is more than a business; it’s a labor of love where friendships are formed, stories are shared, and new chapters begin. Whether you’re searching for your next great read or simply a place to pause and reflect, Megan and Chad invite you to be part of their story—and maybe even start writing your own.
